About the Department
Department of Mathematics
Year of establishment: 1971-72
The Department of Mathematics at Rayagada College (Autonomous), Rayagada, was established in the academic session 1971-72. The Honours course began in 1990-91, the M.Sc. Mathematics programme in 2018, and the B.Sc. Mathematics and Computing (AEDP) programme in 2026. The Department builds strong conceptual foundations, logical reasoning and computational skills, preparing students for higher studies, research, competitive examinations and careers in teaching, data science and computing.

The Department also teaches Mathematics at the +2 level, and as a Minor/interdisciplinary subject to students of other departments as per NEP guidelines.
Laboratory and Computational Facilities
The Department has an attached computer lab with 48 systems. Practical sessions use Python, MATLAB, Scilab, LaTeX, Mathematica, C and C++. Undergraduate students are also introduced to Artificial Intelligence through introductory courses.
Vision
To be a centre of excellence in mathematical education that nurtures analytical, computational and research-oriented thinking, and prepares students to contribute to society and a technology-driven world.
Mission
- Deliver rigorous, NEP-aligned curricula in pure, applied and computational mathematics.
- Integrate software tools and programming into learning so that theory meets practice.
- Encourage multidisciplinary learning by offering Mathematics as a minor to students of other streams.
- Prepare students for higher studies, research, competitive examinations and employment.
- Develop ethical values, communication skills and lifelong learning habits.
Programme Outcomes
B.Sc. Mathematics and B.Sc. Mathematics & Computing (AEDP)
- To prepare the students for a career in Mathematics.
- To prepare the students for higher education and research in Mathematics.
- To develop a conceptual understanding of the subject and an inquisitiveness in the subject.
- To enable the students to acquire the basic skills necessary to understand the subject, and to handle the tools, software and equipment used to learn it.
- To promote wider reading on the subject and on allied interdisciplinary subjects.
M.Sc. Mathematics
On completing the programme, students will be able to:
- Core knowledge: Demonstrate advanced knowledge of pure mathematics, including topology, algebra, real and complex analysis, measure theory, functional analysis and number theory.
- Differential equations and modelling: Formulate and solve ordinary and partial differential equations, and apply them to physical problems such as fluid flow.
- Applied and numerical methods: Use numerical analysis, mathematical statistics, optimization and fuzzy logic to solve applied problems.
- Discrete mathematics and security: Apply graph theory, discrete structures and number-theoretic cryptography to problems in computing and information security.
- Computational skills: Write programs in C, use MATLAB/Scilab for mathematical computation, and prepare scientific documents in LaTeX.
- Emerging areas: Understand the basic concepts of Artificial Intelligence and relate mathematical foundations to modern technologies.
- Research aptitude: Carry out independent study through the dissertation, seminar and viva voce, with sound reasoning, written and oral communication, and academic integrity.
- Broader perspective: Appreciate India’s mathematical and knowledge traditions, and the interdisciplinary role of Mathematics.
- Career readiness: Prepare for Ph.D. study, NET/SET and other competitive examinations, teaching, and careers in data science, computing and allied fields.
Faculty Strength
The sanctioned strength of the Department is 02 Direct Payment (DP) posts, for which the Government of Odisha recruits faculty. To ensure smooth functioning, the College has additionally recruited two more faculty members under College Management. Guest faculty are also engaged as required, based on workload.
The Department imparted teaching facilities in:
- BSc Mathematics Hons.
- MSc Mathematics
- Mathematics as a Generic Elective to Science Students
